FLIP IN & OUT
This project studies the two major additions to The School of Architecture at the University of Virginia.
I focused on how water connects the two otherwise unrelated east and south additions. In the elaborate drainage system water is channeled only by gravity. The circulation and flow of water, which in this case, lies only a few inches below the surface, instigates a situation of “unknown”. The palimpsest like qualities of the myriad of conduits, steam tunnels, and drainage pipes overlay to create a variety of paths serving to connect the areas. The paths are exposed in the form of cut concrete and recessed channels to create a dialogue between interior and exterior. The water also interacts in the visible spectrum by pooling, warping, and distorting the surface.
